HOW CAN YOU 'STEP-UP' YOUR PROJECT?
Welcome to Stepping Up. This guide has been written by science fair alumni - people who have competed and won at the CANADA WIDE SCIENCE FAIR and INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE FAIR level. This guide was written from the perspective, "What could I have used when I was going through science fair." We hope that this will be of great help to all of you who compete today.
The goal of this guide is to convey the aspects of Science Fair that you only learn through experience - everything from designing your project to start to choosing what should be on your backboard all the way to what should you bring to the fair. Obviously, not everyone will be using this guide right from the beginning of this project, so this guide is broken down into a number of sections that you can use regardless of what stage you're at! These sections are:
From this, just choose the section that you want and there are a selection of articles to help you on your way. Good luck!

Obviously, not everyone will be using this guide right from the beginning of this project, so this guide is broken down into a number of sections that you can use regardless of what stage you're at! These sections are:
- Setting It Up - Project and Experiment Design: This section looks at the starting point of your project. So you have an idea, how do you turn that into an investigation that actually has the power to say something useful.
- Who Can (Help You) Do Your Project - Mentorship: Finding a mentor can be hard work, especially if you're not from a big city and you don't have the contacts. This section breaks it down for you, where can you go and how do you make networks?
- Getting in the Know - Resources: Every good project understands the science that comes before it. This section helps you get the background information you need to.
- Letting the Numbers Talk: Data Presentation and Statistics: If you have data, like every good project does, then you need to be able to analyze it and present it. This section shows you how to effectively.
- Lookin' Good (and Sounding Even Better): Oral and Visual Presentation: Being able to convey what you did is just as critical for science fair (and science in general) as doing it in the first place. This section shows you how to make sure you give your project the presentation it deserves.
- What Up: Current Happenings in Science: This section shows you how to keep up-to-date with science. If there's a critical discovery made that deals with your field, you don't want to seem clueless to it when you present your work.
- What Judges Want - Judging: Judging can be the most nerve-racking experience in science fair. This section looks at how to prepare for it and helps you get through with finesse.
- Leaving on a Jet Plane - On Your Way to the Fair: So you made your way to the next level in Science Fair? Great - here's what you don't want to forget in the craziness of it all!
- How to be Happy: The Ups and Downs of Science Fair: Staying happy, motivated and excited is critical to science and science fair. Here we present some strategies on making sure you stay happy all the way from start to finish!
- CWSF vs. ISEF: Taking your project to these levels is a challenge and an honour. This section tells you what each of these levels is about and how to get there!
From this, just choose the section that you want and there are a selection of articles to help you on your way. Good luck!
